Chapter 8 - The Warning at the End of the Aisle

Gabriela repeated the word in her mind.

Tonight.

Not someday.

Not in court.

Not after a letter.

Tonight.

The supermarket sounds came rushing back too loudly: carts rattling, fluorescent lights humming, a child laughing in another aisle, a scanner beeping at the registers.

Everything ordinary kept moving around the extraordinary threat.

Willow tugged Gabriela’s shirt.

“Mommy?”

Gabriela looked down immediately.

Her voice softened.

“We’re leaving.”

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Without the doll?”

Willow made a tiny broken sound.

Gabriela felt it go through her.

But she looked at her daughter and said the hardest thing.

“Yes.”

Willow stared at the toy in Piper’s arms.

Piper looked miserable now.

Janice forced her toward the end of the aisle.

Ronald watched Gabriela with a look that promised this was not over.

Vanessa adjusted her cream jacket, recovering her performance.

“You see?” she said loudly enough for the nearby shoppers. “This is what happens when unstable women try to make children responsible for adult problems.”

Gabriela took one step toward her.

Vanessa’s smile flickered.

“Say one more thing about my stability,” Gabriela said, “and I will ask the store to preserve this entire aisle’s footage before you reach the parking lot.”

Vanessa went still.

Ronald’s mouth tightened.

Janice whispered, “Vanessa.”

That was the first time Janice sounded afraid.

Gabriela looked toward the stock clerk.

“Excuse me.”

The clerk straightened.

“Yes, ma’am?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Gabriela kept her tone clear.

“I need a manager, please.”

Ronald stepped forward.

“No, you don’t.”

The clerk looked between them.

Gabriela lifted her phone.

“Yes. I do.”

The clerk nodded and hurried away.

For a moment, victory seemed possible.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

Then Vanessa looked at Willow again.

Not at Gabriela.

At Willow.

Her threatening smile returned, colder than before.

Gabriela pulled Willow fully behind her.

“Don’t look at her.”

Willow obeyed.

Vanessa whispered, too low for the clerk now gone to hear, “You can freeze accounts. You can call managers. You can file reports.”

Her eyes moved to Willow’s tear-streaked face.

“But you still have to sleep somewhere.”

Ronald put a hand on Vanessa’s arm.

Not stopping her.

Guiding her away.

Janice hurried Piper toward the aisle exit, doll clutched between them.

Gabriela stood frozen.

Her phone remained clenched in one hand.

Her daughter’s hand in the other.

The report had been filed.

But the night had become a shadow ahead of them.
