Chapter 5 - Piper Holds the Stolen Birthday

Piper did not understand bank alerts.

She did not understand stolen savings, family hostility, or why adults could smile while hurting a child.

She only understood that the doll in her arms had made another little girl cry.

Her fingers loosened around the blue dress.

Janice noticed instantly.

“Hold it properly,” she whispered.

Piper flinched.

Willow saw.

For one strange second, the two children looked at each other across the aisle like prisoners in different rooms.

Willow’s cheeks were wet.

Piper’s eyes were confused.

The doll hung between them.

Gabriela crouched slightly, keeping herself between Willow and the adults.

“Willow, stay behind me.”

Willow nodded, still shaking.

Vanessa regained her color and lifted her chin.

“You are making a scene over pocket change.”

Gabriela stood slowly.

“No. You are standing in public with a doll you ripped from a five-year-old while my bank account gets emptied.”

Ronald pointed at her.

“You watch your tone.”

Gabriela looked at his finger, inches from her face.

Then at his eyes.

For years, that finger had ended conversations.

Not today.

“Move your hand away from me.”

Ronald’s jaw tightened.

“You think because you froze a little account you suddenly have power?”

“I think because I filed a report, every attempt after this becomes harder to explain.”

Janice inhaled sharply.

Vanessa’s eyes cut toward her.

There.

Another reaction.

Gabriela noticed.

“What were you planning to take next?”

Ronald’s face turned red.

“You paranoid little—”

“Don’t finish that sentence in front of my daughter.”

Her voice was cold now.

Not loud.

Cold.

Willow pressed her forehead against Gabriela’s back.

Her small arms wrapped around her mother’s waist.

That touch steadied Gabriela more than courage ever could.

Vanessa looked down at Willow, and her expression softened into something far more dangerous than anger.

A smile began at one corner of her mouth.

“Sweet girl,” she said.

Willow shrank back.

Gabriela’s whole body went rigid.

“Do not speak to her.”

Vanessa’s eyes stayed on Willow.

“You’ll understand one day. Some children are born into the wrong hands.”

Gabriela moved immediately, pulling Willow farther behind her.

Janice tightened her grip on Piper’s shoulder.

Ronald stepped toward the aisle exit.

Not leaving.

Positioning.

Gabriela realized then that the stolen money might not be what they came to collect.

It might only have been the pressure.
