Chapter 2 - Diane Enters Like an Owner

Diane did not creep through the mansion.

She invaded it.

Her heels struck the marble foyer with sharp, entitled clicks, pearl necklace rattling against her champagne blouse as she swept one hand toward the staircase.

“You two, start upstairs,” she snapped at the accomplices.

The men moved fast, boxes folded under their arms.

Marcus hesitated near the broken rear door, metal tool case in one hand.

Diane turned on him.

“Don’t stand there. Ethan said the office safe is behind the painting.”

Marcus swallowed.

The mansion lights reflected across the polished floor.

Every movement was being captured.

Diane did not know that.

Or perhaps she thought family privilege made cameras irrelevant.

She crossed through the foyer beneath the chandelier, carrying empty jewelry bags like shopping totes. Her expression was not nervous.

It was eager.

That was what Claire saw from the driveway feed.

Not desperation.

Not confusion.

Pleasure.

Diane had waited to touch what she believed Claire did not deserve.

In the office, Ethan appeared on another camera.

Claire’s husband stormed through the doorway in a navy suit, pale-blue open collar shirt open at the throat, silver watch flashing as he tore a framed painting away from the wall.

The hidden safe gleamed behind it.

Claire’s mouth tightened.

He had known exactly where to look.

He pointed at Marcus, who hurried in behind him.

“Find the company files before she gets inside.”

Claire heard the audio through the security app.

Her fingers curled around the phone.

Not because Ethan wanted money.

She had known greed lived in him.

Because he sounded afraid.

That meant he knew there was something in this house strong enough to destroy him if Claire reached it first.

Diane ripped open drawers, scattering private papers across the carpet.

“Where are the original shares?” she demanded.

Ethan ignored her and slammed a leather folder onto the desk.

Claire watched from outside as the family threat protocol quietly took control of the mansion.

No alarm blared inside.

No warning voice.

Just silent activation.

Door sensors.

Camera locks.

Remote barriers.

Evidence preservation.
