Chapter 4 - Ethan Sees the Monitor

Ethan recovered faster than Diane.

He always did.

That was one of his most dangerous talents.

His panic could become command in half a second.

He stepped over Marcus’s dropped tool and grabbed the edge of the office desk.

“What did you touch?” he snapped.

Marcus stared at the sealed office door.

“Nothing. I didn’t touch anything.”

The lights flashed once.

Not off.

Not bright.

Just a deliberate pulse through the mansion.

Diane recoiled against the dark marble kitchen island, jewelry bag hanging open from one hand, Claire’s grandmother’s bracelet rattling on her wrist.

“What was that?” she whispered.

Ethan turned toward the surveillance monitor mounted discreetly inside the office wall.

He had ignored it earlier.

Now the screen came alive.

Claire stood outside the front entrance, phone in one hand, expression unreadable.

She looked elegant.

Still.

Terrifyingly calm.

Ethan’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Diane moved behind him and saw the image.

Her face collapsed.

“She’s outside?”

Claire pressed the exterior intercom.

Her voice entered every room at once.

“Keep searching. Every theft is already evidence.”

The accomplices froze beside the moving boxes.

Marcus stared toward the locked rear door.

Diane clawed at the diamond bracelet on her wrist as if it had become hot.

Ethan’s face twisted.

“Claire!”

She did not answer.

Not directly.

The monitor showed her standing under afternoon light, gold jewelry steady at her throat, no tears on her face now.

Ethan grabbed the desk phone.

Dead.

He grabbed his cell.

No signal inside the lockdown shield.

Diane’s breathing turned shallow.

“Ethan, what did she do?”

He looked at the safe.

Then the screen.

Then the folder in his hand.

For the first time, Claire saw him understand.

He had not broken into a defenseless house.

He had stepped into a system built by a woman he had underestimated.
