Chapter 7 - Diane Cannot Remove the Bracelet
Diane clawed at the bracelet.
The diamonds shook against her skin.
Her red nails scraped the clasp, slipped, scraped again.
The more she fought it, the worse she looked.
On camera, it was perfect.
An elegant mother-in-law in a beige pantsuit, trapped by stolen jewelry she had fastened herself.
“Get this off me,” she hissed.
Ethan barely looked at her.
“Be quiet.”
Diane froze.
The insult hit differently now.
Before, she had been his ally.
His mother.
The woman who told him marriage made every room theirs.
Now she was noisy evidence wearing diamonds.
Claire saw the exact second Diane understood.
Her face twisted.
“You told me she had no right to lock us out.”
Ethan’s eyes flashed.
“Not now.”
“You told me the files were family assets.”
“Mother.”
“You told me the bracelet was part of what she owed us.”
Claire’s breath caught.
There it was.
Not the whole truth.
Enough.
Ethan lunged toward Diane, not to hurt her, but to stop her mouth.
She recoiled dramatically, bracelet raised between them like proof.
The camera pivoted.
The monitor behind them showed Claire outside, silent and unmoving.
Diane looked toward it.
Her face crumpled.
“Claire, I didn’t know.”
Claire’s voice entered softly.
“That the cameras worked?”
Diane flinched.
The accomplices stood frozen beside the boxes, clearly wishing they could vanish into the marble floor.
Ethan grabbed the decoy folder and slammed it against the desk.
“You think this makes you untouchable?”
Claire took one step closer to the front door outside.
The movement filled the monitor.
“No. It makes you visible.”
Ethan stared at her.
The word visible seemed to frighten him more than police, lawsuits, or locked doors.
