Chapter 9 - Claire Waits Outside

Claire did not enter.
That was her power.
Ethan wanted a confrontation he could physically control.
A room where he could crowd her.
Lower his voice.
Reach for her wrist.
Block a doorway.
Turn fear into compliance.
She gave him none of that.
She stood outside in bright afternoon light, white blazer sharp against the dark front door, phone raised, face unreadable.
Inside, every aggressive movement made him look worse.
Every command became evidence.
Every attempt to cover something revealed something else.
Julian spoke in her earpiece.
“Exterior units are close. Still no visual confirmation from your side.”
Claire’s gaze flicked once toward the driveway window reflection.
Red.
Blue.
Moving.
She did not smile.
This was not victory yet.
Victory would be later, maybe.
After statements.
After damage.
After divorce papers.
After insurance reports.
After explaining to herself how love became surveillance footage.
For now, it was containment.
Ethan slammed both palms on the desk.
“Open the door, Claire.”
Diane cried, “Please.”
Marcus said nothing.
The accomplices stood beside their abandoned boxes.
Claire pressed the intercom again.
“Put the folder down.”
Ethan laughed once, ugly and wild.
“Come take it.”
Claire’s face did not move.
“I don’t need to.”
The office lights flickered once more.
The monitor behind Ethan split into camera angles automatically, though no text appeared.
Rear door.
Office safe.
Jewelry box.
Kitchen island.
Hallway boxes.
Every angle holding him.
Ethan turned and saw himself from above.
Then Diane.
Then Marcus.
Then the accomplices.
His face collapsed into recognition.
The house was not only locked.
It was narrating him.
Diane finally stopped pulling at the bracelet.
Her hand hung limp at her side.

For the first time, no one inside the mansion moved.
