Chapter 1 - The Maid Cap

A wife disguises herself as her own maid to test a housekeeper’s warning and catches her husband treating another woman like the mistress of the mansion while she watches in silence from behind a cleaning cart.
Claire Carter stood in the dim service hallway of her own mansion, wearing a gray maid dress that did not belong to her.
The white apron scratched against her waist.
The maid cap pinned over her dark brown hair felt ridiculous, humiliating, and terrifyingly necessary.
Grace stood in front of her, hands shaking as she adjusted the cap lower over Claire’s forehead.
“Push the cart and keep your head down.”
Claire looked at her housekeeper.
Grace was not dramatic.
She had worked for the Carter estate for twelve years, long enough to know when to speak and when silence kept people employed.
That was why Claire had believed her when she whispered, “Mrs. Carter, you need to see what happens when you’re not home.”
Now Claire gripped the cleaning cart handle until her knuckles turned white.
Spray bottles rattled.
The yellow bucket swung softly.
A white cleaning brush lay beside folded towels as if this were just another night of polished marble and quiet service.
Then laughter drifted from the living room.
A woman’s laughter.
Soft.
Relaxed.
Possessive.
Claire’s stomach folded inward.
She had heard rumors for weeks.
A woman seen entering through the side gate.
Ethan sending staff home early.
A pale pink robe missing from Claire’s dressing room.
Wine glasses found in the east sitting room after Ethan claimed he had worked alone all night.
She had ignored each clue because marriage taught women to fear the truth before they feared the lie.
But the laughter came again.
Inside her house.
Under her chandelier.
Grace swallowed.
“Go slowly.”
Claire pushed the cart forward.
The wheels rolled over polished marble, soft and accusing.
She kept her head down as instructed.
Her breathing thinned when she reached the doorway.
Then she saw her.
A blonde woman lounged in the elegant living room, draped in a pale pink satin robe and fluffy slippers, one leg folded beneath her, wineglass dangling from relaxed fingers.
Claire’s robe.
Claire’s slippers.
Claire’s room reflected in the woman’s posture.
The mistress leaned toward the coffee table and glanced at a small mess beside the wine bottle.
“Can somebody clean this table already?”
Claire’s face began to crumble.
Then Ethan entered.
Fitted black suit.
Open white shirt.
Dark styled hair.
The easy smile he no longer gave his wife.
He walked straight to the woman, wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and kissed the top of her head.
“Make yourself comfortable, sweetheart. This house is yours.”
Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.
