Chapter 7 - The Cleaning Cart Between Them

The cleaning cart looked absurdly small between Claire and Ethan.
Yellow bucket.
White brush.
Spray bottles.
Folded towels.
A wheeled symbol of the role he had expected invisible women to play.
Clean the table.
Clear the glass.
Remove the mess.
Do not ask who made it.
Claire placed one hand on the cart handle.
Ethan’s eyes followed the movement.
“What are you doing?”
She did not answer.
She rolled the cart slightly forward, placing it more firmly between herself and him.
Not as a shield because she feared he would strike her.
As a line.
Ethan recognized it and hated it.
“This is childish.”
Claire’s face twisted.
“Childish is dressing your mistress in your wife’s robe and telling her the mansion is hers.”
The mistress flinched.
Ethan pointed toward the hallway.
“Grace, leave.”
Grace did not move.
Ethan turned his head slowly.
“I said leave.”
Grace’s face went pale, but she stayed.
That was the first time Claire had ever seen a staff member openly refuse Ethan.
It changed something in the room.
Ethan felt it.
His control depended on obedience moving faster than conscience.
Tonight, conscience had slowed everything down.
The mistress set the wineglass on the coffee table.
Her hand shook.
“Ethan, I need to know if she’s your wife.”
Claire looked at her.
“Still.”
The word landed hard.
Still.
The mistress recoiled as if the robe had become too tight.
Ethan’s face darkened.
“You don’t understand our marriage.”
Claire turned to him.
“No. I think I finally do.”
He stepped closer.
“Don’t humiliate me in my own home.”
Claire looked around the living room.
Warm chandelier light.
Cream walls.
Floral arrangement.
Staircase.
Doorway.
Marble floor.
Every corner held a piece of her labor.
Her taste.
Her patience.
Her silence.
“Your own home,” she repeated softly.
Ethan went still.
The mistress looked from Ethan to Claire.
Grace’s eyes widened in the hallway.
Claire did not explain.
Not yet.
The prompt would not reveal the full answer.
But the sentence hung like a chandelier about to fall.
Ethan recovered with effort.
“You are emotional.”
Claire smiled through tears.
“That used to work better when I didn’t know you were afraid.”
His nostrils flared.
The mistress whispered, “Afraid of what?”
No one answered.
May you like
The mansion itself seemed to lean closer.
