Chapter 8 - The Mistress Understands Too Late

The mistress stepped away from Ethan.
Only a little.
But enough.
Ethan noticed instantly.
Claire noticed too.
The blonde woman’s face had changed from smug entitlement to embarrassed calculation. She was not innocent. She had enjoyed the wine, the robe, the orders to staff, the feeling of walking through a mansion as if inheritance could be absorbed through satin.
But now she understood Ethan had not simply betrayed a wife.
He had lied about the structure of the life he offered her.
A married man was one kind of danger.
A married man pretending his wife had already vanished from her own home was another.
“Ethan,” she said carefully, “what did you mean when you said this house was mine?”
Ethan’s eyes flashed.
“I meant you should feel comfortable.”
Claire let out a breath.
That was almost funny.
Almost.
The mistress looked at Claire.
“Is this your house?”
Ethan snapped, “Don’t ask her.”
Claire’s eyes stayed on him.
“Why not?”
He ignored her.
The mistress pressed, voice trembling now.
“Ethan.”
He turned on her.
“You wanted comfort. I gave it to you.”
She recoiled.
There he was.
The man Claire knew.
The man beneath the velvet voice.
The one who believed generosity bought silence and charm excused cruelty.
Claire felt no sympathy for the mistress’s shock, but she recognized the moment a woman realizes she has been handled rather than loved.
The robe slipped slightly from the mistress’s shoulder.
She pulled it closed again, now with shame instead of confidence.
Claire looked away.
She did not want to watch another woman discover humiliation while wearing her clothes.
Ethan saw the softening and mistook it for weakness.
“Claire, go upstairs. We’ll talk.”
She looked at him.
“No.”
His mouth tightened.
“I am trying to spare you.”
That did make her laugh.
One small, devastated sound.
“Spare me?”
Grace whispered from the hallway, “Mrs. Carter…”
Claire knew what Grace meant.
Careful.
Ethan was angriest when his mask failed.
The mistress was unstable now, embarrassed and frightened.
The room could turn.
Claire looked at the cleaning cart.
At the fallen rag.
At the wineglass.
At the robe.
At Ethan.
Then she said, “No more private rooms.”
Ethan’s face went hard.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
Claire’s eyes blazed.
“I just did.”
The mistress stared at her.
So did Grace.
So did Ethan.
