Chapter 5 - The Housekeeper’s Warning

Grace had not wanted Claire to come in disguise.

At least, not at first.

When Claire arrived at the service entrance that night, hands shaking around the spare key, Grace had looked at her with a kind of pity that made Claire furious.

“Tell me,” Claire said.

Grace’s eyes filled.

“I’ve told you enough.”

“No. You told me a woman has been here. You told me Ethan dismissed half the staff. You told me she wears things from upstairs.”

Grace lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Carter, seeing it will hurt worse.”

Claire remembered looking through the service corridor toward the glowing living room.

“It already hurts. I need to know if I’m crazy.”

Grace’s face changed.

Not pity now.

Understanding.

That was how the maid dress happened.

A spare uniform from the laundry.

A cap.

A cart.

A warning.

Push the cart and keep your head down.

Now Claire stood in the living room, no longer hidden, and understood that Grace had been protecting not only her job but Claire’s last illusion.

The mistress looked between them all.

Her confidence was cracking, but arrogance still held.

“Ethan,” she said, voice sharp, “what is going on?”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes, Ethan. Tell her.”

His jaw tightened.

He hated that name in her mouth now.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it gave the mistress permission to hear the marriage.

Ethan moved toward Claire again, slower this time.

“We need to speak privately.”

“No.”

The word surprised all three of them.

Even Claire.

Ethan stopped.

“This is between us.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“Us?”

Her voice trembled.

Not weakly.

Violently.

“There are three people in this room, Ethan. Four if you count the woman who had to dress me like staff so I could learn what my husband does in my house.”

The mistress recoiled.

“My house?” she repeated.

Claire turned toward her at last.

The blonde woman’s face had gone tense with dawning panic.

She was realizing she might not be the chosen woman in a palace.

She might be a guest in another woman’s humiliation.

Claire looked her up and down.

The robe.

The slippers.

The wineglass.

The entitlement.

“You didn’t ask many questions, did you?”

The mistress’s face twisted.

“He told me—”

Ethan snapped, “Stop talking.”

There it was.

Control.

Directed at both women now.

Claire’s tears dried into something colder.

“Don’t speak to her like that because she accidentally told the truth.”

Ethan’s eyes flashed.

The mistress stared at Claire, confused by the defense.

Claire was confused by it too.

But betrayal did not make her cruel.
