Chapter 3 - Go Clean Something

The mistress’s expression changed first.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
A woman accustomed to being looked at with admiration did not enjoy being looked at with judgment.
She lifted her chin, wineglass catching warm lamp light.
“Why are you standing there? Go clean something.”
Claire’s breath stopped.
Ethan turned slightly, not yet seeing her fully.
His face carried casual irritation, the expression he used when service interrupted comfort.
“That’s new staff,” the mistress said, still staring at Claire. “She’s strange.”
Ethan barely glanced.
“Grace handles them.”
Them.
Claire’s throat tightened.
For eight years, she had chosen fabrics, menus, charity events, staff bonuses, Christmas gifts, garden layouts, and seating arrangements in this mansion.
For eight years, she had entertained Ethan’s clients and soothed his temper after failed deals.
For eight years, she had signed thank-you cards to people who credited him for her work.
Now she stood in an apron, and he placed her among them without seeing her.
Grace had told her to keep her head down.
But Grace had also told her the truth deserved witnesses.
Claire’s fingers loosened from the cart handle.
The cart rolled forward half an inch.
The bucket rattled.
Ethan’s eyes flicked toward the sound.
Still not enough.
The mistress stepped closer.
Pale robe swaying.
Wine trembling slightly inside the glass now.
“You heard me.”
Claire looked at the robe.
At the slippers.
At the wineglass.
At Ethan’s open shirt and comfortable smile.
Then at the staircase behind them, leading toward the bedroom he had once promised would be the safest room in her life.
Her tears came instantly, hot and humiliating, but her voice did not rise.
She did not scream.
She did not collapse.
She stepped out from behind the cleaning cart with one hard movement.
The wheels squeaked behind her.
Ethan’s head turned.
At first, his eyes showed irritation.
Then confusion.
Then recognition struck him like a physical blow.
The color drained from his face.
His hand slipped from the mistress’s waist.
The mistress looked from him to Claire, suddenly alert.
Claire reached up slowly and pulled the maid cap back just enough for her face to be fully visible.
Her dark hair loosened at the temples.
Tears shone in her eyes.
But beneath them was a fury so cold Ethan took one involuntary step back.
Claire looked straight at him.
“Look at me and tell her whose house this really is.”
The living room became silent.
The chandelier glowed.
The cart stood between them.

And Ethan Carter finally saw the woman he had tried to erase.
