Chapter 1 - The MRI Nobody Expected
A woman pushed down the stairs at her sister’s engagement discovers that her MRI contains older spinal fractures and a mysterious metal fragment that forces the doctors to preserve everything for police.
Lena Hale sat half-upright in the private emergency-room suite, wrapped in a cream hospital blanket over her white beaded engagement-party dress.
The diamonds at her throat looked cruelly out of place beneath the cold clinical lights.
Her brunette hair had loosened from its jeweled updo, soft strands sticking to her damp temples.
A bandage covered her thigh.
Pain burned through her back every time she breathed.
Dr. Ethan Reed stood beside the bed with Lena’s smartphone in one hand, the screen showing an unreadable audio waveform.
Dr. Marcus Shaw stood near the two MRI screens, his face tightening as he studied the images.
A Columbus police officer waited silently in the open doorway.
Lena gripped the blanket with shaking fingers.
“My sister pushed me, and everyone called it a joke.”
Dr. Reed looked at her bruises.
Then at the MRI.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Fury carefully forced into professionalism.
He turned the screen toward her.
“The fall fractured your spine, but it did not cause all of this.”
Lena’s breath caught.
Dr. Shaw stepped forward and slammed his medical tablet onto the counter.
“Three fractures are older, and one contains a metal fragment.”
Lena stared at the glowing image.
Her lips parted.
Tears spilled down her face before sound returned.
“I have never been shot.”
The room went still.
Dr. Reed snatched the tablet, slid it into a sealed evidence envelope, and pointed sharply toward the officer.
“Preserve every image. Nobody touches this chart.”
The officer stepped closer without speaking.
Lena stared at the mysterious shadow on the scan.
