Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Beaded Dress

The dress was still beautiful.

That almost made everything worse.

White beads shimmered across Lena’s chest and sleeves, catching the hospital light every time she shook.

It had been chosen for a celebration.

Her sister’s engagement.

A wealthy room.

Champagne.

Camera flashes.

Family smiles.

Now the same dress sat wrinkled beneath a hospital blanket while doctors stared at her spine and used words that made the room colder.

Older fractures.

Metal fragment.

Evidence.

Lena looked down at her wedding ring, then at the bracelet still locked around her wrist.

Every piece of jewelry made her look like she belonged somewhere elegant.

But her body was telling a different story.

Dr. Reed placed the sealed evidence envelope on the counter but kept one gloved hand over it.

Dr. Shaw moved closer to the MRI screens, blocking the controls with his body.

The police officer in the doorway shifted one step inward.

No arrest.

No accusation.

Only a silent change in the room’s gravity.

Lena swallowed hard.

“Are you saying this didn’t happen last night?”

Dr. Reed looked directly at her.

“I am saying last night does not explain everything we found.”

That was not an answer.

It was worse.

It was a boundary around something too dangerous to guess aloud.

Lena’s hand tightened around the bedrail.

Pain shot through her back, but she did not release it.

The officer’s body camera clicked softly as he activated it.

The sound made Lena turn.

He did not speak.

His silence was not cold.

It was careful.

Dr. Shaw stared at the scan again, jaw locked.

“There is no reason this should be treated as routine trauma.”

Lena’s eyes widened.

Routine.

That word seemed absurd beside the image on the screen.

Nothing about her body felt routine now.

Nothing about her sister’s “joke” felt isolated.

Nothing about the doctors’ faces suggested she could go home after stitches and pain medicine.

Dr. Reed lowered his voice.

“Lena, do you remember any prior injury to your back?”

She shook her head too fast.

Terror cracked through her breathing.

“No.”

The word sounded small.

But the scan did not care how small she sounded.

It waited on the screen, bright and impossible.
