Chapter 6 - The Door Stays Open

The wooden door to the suite stayed open.

Not wide.

Enough.

Enough for the officer to watch the hallway.

Enough for cold fluorescent light to spill over the floor.

Enough to make Lena feel that the world beyond the room had become dangerous.

Dr. Reed noticed her staring.

“No one unauthorized is coming in.”

Unauthorized.

Another word that changed the air.

Lena’s fingers tightened around the bedrail.

Her diamond bracelet clicked softly against the metal.

The sound made her flinch.

Everything sounded too loud now.

Dr. Shaw leaned toward Dr. Reed and spoke low, but not low enough to hide urgency.

“We need imaging archived outside the standard file.”

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Do it.”

The officer’s head turned slightly toward the hallway.

His posture sharpened.

Lena saw it.

“Who’s there?”

No answer came from the doorway.

Only hospital sounds.

A cart rolling somewhere far away.

A monitor beep from another room.

Muted voices beyond the curtains.

Dr. Reed moved closer to Lena’s bed.

“You are safe in this room.”

Lena looked at him.

“Was I safe before?”

His face changed.

He did not answer.

That silence did more damage than any guess.

Lena’s tears came harder.

She pressed one hand over her mouth, trying not to sob because every breath hurt her back.

The officer stepped one inch further inside.

Not enough to threaten.

Enough to be ready.

Dr. Reed sealed the envelope completely now.

The sound of the adhesive closing was small.

Final.

Dr. Shaw placed both hands in front of the MRI controls, physically blocking them as if someone might try to erase what the screens showed.

The reference image of the room formed around them.

Lena in bed.

Doctors beside the scans.

Officer in the doorway.

Evidence preserved.

Fear thick enough to touch.
