Chapter 8 - The Chart Nobody Touches

Dr. Reed placed a hand on the medical chart before anyone else could reach it.
“Nobody touches this chart.”
The command carried through the suite.
A nurse just outside the doorway stopped mid-step.
The officer turned his head.
Dr. Shaw exhaled slowly.
Lena stared at Dr. Reed’s hand.
A chart was supposed to be routine.
Vitals.
Pain level.
Imaging.
Treatment plan.
Now it had become contested territory.
Something that had to be protected.
Something someone might want changed.
The thought made Lena feel sick.
“Why would someone touch it?”
Dr. Reed did not answer quickly.
That was answer enough.
Dr. Shaw spoke instead, careful and precise.
“When a scan contains findings that do not match the reported history, we preserve the record.”
Lena looked at him.
“The reported history was a fall.”
“Yes.”
“And the scan says more.”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
The word more terrified her.
More injuries.
More history.
More lies.
More people involved.
The final family secret stayed hidden.
Who caused the older injuries stayed unknown.
Where the fragment came from remained unanswered.
But the existence of more was now undeniable.
Lena opened her eyes to find the officer closer than before.
Not crowding her.
Just close enough that anyone entering would have to pass him first.
Dr. Reed lifted the evidence envelope.
The tablet inside pressed against the sealed material.
Dr. Shaw stood before the MRI controls.
The soft window light touched Lena’s beaded dress, making it sparkle absurdly in the sterile room.
She looked down at herself.
Engagement-party dress.
Hospital blanket.
Evidence room future.
Her lips trembled.
“I came in because my back hurt.”
Dr. Reed’s face softened.

“And now we are going to protect why.”
