Chapter 7 - Vanessa’s Name Hangs in the Room

Vanessa’s name did not need to be repeated often.

Once was enough.

It stayed in the room like perfume after someone cruel had left.

Lena’s sister.

The engagement.

The laughter.

The fall everyone minimized.

No flashback came.

Only Lena’s present knowledge that she had been pushed, and the room had called it a joke.

Dr. Reed held the sealed phone sleeve.

“Did Vanessa have access to you after the fall?”

Lena stared at him.

The question was so specific it frightened her.

“I don’t know.”

Dr. Shaw looked toward the metal fragment on the screen.

“Access may not be the right time frame.”

Lena turned to him.

“What does that mean?”

He immediately looked regretful.

Dr. Reed gave him a warning glance.

Not because the truth did not matter.

Because too much, too fast, could crush a patient already fighting pain and panic.

The officer remained silent, body camera facing the room.

Lena’s eyes moved between the three men.

“You all think this is bigger than last night.”

No one denied it.

Dr. Reed crouched slightly beside the bed so he would not loom over her.

“I think your immediate safety matters first.”

Lena’s laugh came out broken.

“My safety became immediate after the MRI?”

Dr. Reed’s jaw locked.

“Yes.”

The honesty stunned her.

It was brutal.

But it was not a lie.

She gripped the blanket again.

Her knuckles whitened.

“If my family asks to see me…”

The officer stepped closer.

“They wait.”

No arrest.

No accusation.

No reveal.

Just a line.

A boundary.

For once, a boundary not drawn by Vanessa, or by family reputation, or by whoever had hidden the older injuries.

Drawn around Lena.

Her eyes returned to the screen.

The mysterious fragment shone silently.
