Chapter 1 - The Baby They Refused to See
A woman’s parents reject her newborn and demand her company shares until an unexpected man enters the hospital room and leaves them terrified.
The recovery-room door opened softly.
A nurse stepped inside carrying Noah in a blue-striped hospital blanket, his tiny face tucked beneath a soft cap, his hands moving in faint newborn motions.
Claire Mercer lifted her exhausted arms before the nurse even reached the bed.
The moment Noah was placed against her chest, Claire curved around him with aching tenderness and kissed his forehead.
For one breath, the private Manhattan maternity suite felt peaceful.
Daylight softened the curtains.
The medical monitor pulsed quietly.
The IV line rested beside Claire’s wrist.
The cream blanket covered her trembling body.
Then her mother recoiled.
The older woman stepped backward as if the newborn were something shameful, both hands raised, silver-gray bob trembling above her pearl necklace.
“We will never acknowledge a fatherless child.”
Claire’s smile disappeared.
Her father moved beside his wife, charcoal suit perfect, arms folding across his chest as he looked down at the baby with cold judgment.
“And we will never hold that baby.”
Claire’s arms tightened around Noah.
The baby shifted safely against her chest.
Then her mother pulled a legal folder from her handbag and slammed it onto the bedside table.
The sound made the physician turn sharply.
The folder opened.
A fountain pen struck the page.
“Sign your company shares over to Grant, or raise him completely alone.”
Claire stared at the pen.
Then at her parents.
With two fingers, she pushed it off the table.
It hit the tile.
“Then don’t touch him, and take your forged folder with you.”
Heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway.
The door opened again.
A tall man in a dark overcoat stepped into the room, followed by shadowed attorneys and a hospital administrator.
Claire’s parents turned pale.
The man moved beside Claire’s bed, placed one hand on the rail, and stared at them.
