Chapter 8 - The Question Nobody Answers

Claire’s father finally asked the question the whole room had been avoiding.

“What does she have on us?”

The man in the overcoat stared at him.

Claire’s mother snapped toward her husband.

“Stop.”

Too late.

The question had revealed everything.

Not who are you?

Not why are you here?

Not how dare you enter?

What does she have on us?

The attorneys remained still.

The physician’s eyes narrowed.

Claire’s heart beat once, hard.

Her father realized his mistake the second the words left his mouth.

His face tightened.

The man let the silence stretch.

Claire did not fill it.

She would not reveal evidence.

She would not reveal debts.

She would not reveal investigations.

She would not explain the engagement, the company, the man, or the truth her parents feared.

Not in this moment.

Not while Noah slept against her chest.

The man stepped closer to Claire’s parents.

“You should leave.”

Her mother’s face twisted.

“You cannot remove us.”

“No one said remove.”

He looked toward the closed folder.

“I said leave.”

The hospital administrator shifted near the door, but no security entered.

No one touched them.

No final consequence arrived.

Still, Claire’s parents did not move.

Because leaving meant admitting the plan had failed.

Staying meant risking more words.

Her mother’s fingers shook.

Her father stared at the man as if remembering something that made his mouth dry.

Claire looked between them.

They knew him.

Not casually.

Not socially.

They knew enough to fear what he could do without raising his voice.
