Chapter 5 - The Pen on the Floor

The fountain pen lay on the tile.
Claire stared at it.
Her mother had pressed it against the folder with such force that the metal tip had clicked against paper like a weapon.
Sign.
That was what they always wanted from her.
A signature.
A surrender.
A clean document they could hold up later and call voluntary.
She had pushed it away with two fingers.
Such a small act.
Yet now everyone kept glancing at the pen.
The physician looked at it with concern.
The attorneys looked at it like evidence.
Her father looked at it like failure.
Her mother looked at it like a servant refusing an order.
The man in the overcoat bent and picked it up.
Claire’s mother jolted.
“Put that back.”
He looked at the pen.
Then at her.
“No.”
The word was simple.
Her mother stepped back.
Claire almost smiled.
Not because she was safe.
Not completely.
But because the balance in the room had changed so suddenly that her parents were still trying to understand where their power had gone.
Her father pointed toward the folder.
“That document belongs to us.”
The man placed the pen on the bedside table, away from Claire’s reach and away from her mother’s hand.
“The document is unsigned.”
Claire’s father swallowed.
Her mother’s face flushed.
The distinction mattered.
Unsigned meant unfinished.
Unfinished meant contested.
Contested meant someone had failed.
Claire touched Noah’s blanket.
“He will never be a reason I sign away my life.”
Her mother’s eyes flashed.
“You will regret humiliating us.”
The man’s gaze sharpened.
“No. You will regret saying that in this room.”
Silence fell.
May you like
Even Noah’s tiny movement seemed loud.
