Chapter 6 - The Attorneys Behind Him

The two attorneys behind the man never spoke.

That made them worse.

Their portfolios stayed closed, black and heavy, held against dark suits. Their faces remained partly obscured by the room’s bright doorway light and the soft shadows of the maternity suite.

Claire’s mother kept looking at them.

Each glance made her more unstable.

“Who are they?” she demanded.

The man did not answer.

Her father said her name quietly, warning her to stop.

She ignored him.

“I asked a question.”

The hospital administrator moved beside the door, calm but alert.

The physician stood near Claire’s IV stand, her expression growing harder with each passing second.

Claire held Noah closer.

The baby’s cheek rested warm against her chest.

The man in the overcoat finally looked at Claire.

For half a second, his face softened.

Only half a second.

No relationship revealed.

No history explained.

No promise spoken.

But Claire saw it.

So did her mother.

That tiny softness frightened the older woman more than his anger.

Her eyes dropped toward Claire’s blanket, as if searching for something.

Claire’s hidden ring stayed concealed.

Her hand did not move.

Her father noticed the mother’s glance.

His face changed again.

Suspicion.

Dread.

Recognition not yet complete.

The man turned back to them.

“You came here to pressure her minutes after delivery.”

Claire’s mother lifted her chin.

“We came to protect what belongs to the family.”

His voice lowered.

“You mean what she built.”

The room froze.

Claire’s father stared at him.

The attorneys did not react.

That told Claire the man had not guessed.
