Chapter 7 - Her Mother Loses Her Voice

Claire’s mother had always owned the last word.
At dinner tables.
During board calls.
In hospital waiting rooms.
At charity events.
In private, where cruelty did not need perfume.
But now she could not find a sentence that did not make her look worse.
She had rejected the newborn.
She had called him fatherless.
She had threatened Claire with isolation.
She had demanded company shares while the baby was still warm from the nurse’s arms.
And then the man in the dark overcoat had entered.
Now every defense exposed another motive.
Every accusation sounded like fear.
Every glance toward the attorneys betrayed recognition.
Her mother tried again anyway.
“Claire has been unstable since the pregnancy.”
The physician stepped forward.
“No.”
The word cracked through the room.
Claire’s mother stared at her.
The doctor continued, calm and fierce.
“My patient is exhausted. She is postpartum. She is not available for intimidation.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
She had not expected the doctor to speak like that.
Her mother looked insulted, then panicked, because the doctor had said intimidation.
Not concern.
Not family discussion.
Intimidation.
The man in the overcoat looked at the transfer folder.
“Close it.”
Claire’s father did not move.
The man’s eyes lifted.
“Now.”
Her father slowly reached for the folder and closed it halfway.
Not fully.
Halfway.
Even that small obedience humiliated him.
Claire watched it happen.
For the first time since her parents entered, she allowed herself to breathe deeper.
Noah shifted slightly.
She kissed his forehead again.
Her mother saw the kiss and looked away.
Not ashamed.
Defeated.

For now.
