Emily did not keep the home.
People expected:
Change locks.
Reclaim space.
Victory.
She said no.
Too many memories.
She found an apartment near Megan.
Two bedrooms.
Cheap carpet.
Bad kitchen.
No backyard.
No Derek.
No locked office.
She moved with police standby because belongings still had to be divided under court orders.
Derek was not present.
He had been released pending trial under strict no-contact conditions after an initial detention period.
The system did not keep him jailed simply because everyone hated him.
Risk assessment.
Conditions.
Electronic monitoring.
No approach to Noah or Emily.
No school contact.
No home contact.
Emily packed quickly.
At the old house, she found a cereal box Noah used to eat every morning.
She sat on the kitchen floor and cried.
Not because she wanted Derek.
Because leaving abusive homes does not erase the ordinary life lived inside them.
