Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE
Police searched the Walker home the next morning.
I learned details later through testimony and records, not because anyone invited an ER doctor to investigate.
Important boundary.
They found a magnetic desk sculpture in Derek’s home office.
A black metal stand.
Box label said:
216-piece neodymium magnetic sphere set.
Tray held 202.
Fourteen missing.
Not eleven.
Three unaccounted for.
Could mean lost under furniture.
Could mean previously passed through Noah.
Could mean nothing.
The set alone did not prove Derek forced ingestion.
Fingerprints were useless; everyone in a household may touch things.
What mattered was placement.
The desk sculpture sat in a locked office.
Emily said Noah was not allowed inside.
Derek carried the key.
Police also found a jar of peanut butter on the office shelf.
That meant little by itself.
People eat.
Then they found a child-sized plastic spoon in the desk trash.
Again:
Not enough.
Layered evidence, not magic.
Derek’s phone was seized under warrant later.
Search history from the previous evening:

Those searches occurred at 7:11 p.m.
Noah entered our ER at 11:38.
Derek had known a child might have swallowed magnets for more than four hours before coming to the hospital.
Did he seek care?
No.
Did he call poison control?
No.
At 7:19 he texted Emily:
NOAH IS FAKING AGAIN. DO NOT FEED INTO IT.
At 7:31:
KEEP HIM IN HIS ROOM.
At 8:04:
IF HE COMES OUT I’LL HANDLE IT.
Noah later said he escaped through his bedroom window at approximately 10:45.
Doorbell footage from a neighbor showed a small figure in a gray hoodie running past at 10:51.
Rain.
No coat.
Toward the hospital.
One point eight miles.
He had stopped twice, according to another camera.
Bent over.
Then kept walking.

He had learned that accepting help could cost someone else.
