Chapter 14 - what the camera heard behind the boardroom wall
The recovered audio was damaged.
But usable.

7:31 a.m.
Elena’s camera sat inside Silas’s room.
The microphone picked up sound through the partly open door and adjacent service corridor.
Arthur had left Silas briefly to retrieve a document.
Outside, voices.
Vivian.
Grant.
Margot.
Then a fourth voice.
Male.
Thomas.
Everyone went silent when they heard him.
Thomas:
“Arthur cannot leave with the file.”
Margot:
“No one touches Arthur.”
Thomas:
“Then stop him another way.”
Vivian:
“What are you suggesting?”
Thomas:
“Nothing permanent.”
Grant:
“This is insane.”
Thomas:
“What’s insane is letting Silas blow up the company because he suddenly discovered morality at seventy-eight.”
Silas closed his eyes.
Margot:
“Charlotte’s evidence must be released correctly.”
Thomas laughed.
“You still worship my aunt’s plan.”
Margot:
“Your father stole from the family.”
Thomas:
“My father built half of what Silas took credit for.”
There it was.
Resentment.
Inheritance beyond money.
Legacy.
Thomas believed Edward had been erased from Whitmore history.
The offshore structures preserved Edward’s wealth and influence.
Thomas had spent years protecting them.
Not for Marcus.
For himself.
Then the recording:
Thomas:
“Marcus believes incapacity gives him control.”
Vivian:
“It does.”
Thomas:
“Temporarily.”
Grant:
“What does that mean?”
Thomas:
“When the Charlotte trust activates, the disclosure clause opens. The three of you become subjects of review.”
Silence.
The heirs had not known.
Thomas did.
Vivian:
“You said the trust was ours.”
Thomas:
“I said you would have access.”
Marcus’s voice suddenly entered.
He had arrived earlier than the official hallway footage showed.
Marcus:
“What happens after review?”
Thomas:
“If Silas is still competent, he removes you.”
Marcus:
“And if he isn’t?”
Thomas:
“Governance passes to neutral family custody.”
Grant:
“Who?”
Thomas:
“Me.”
The boardroom where everyone now listened became completely silent.
Thomas had told them.
At least some of them.
Marcus knew before entering Silas’s room that his plan could eventually hand power to Thomas.
Why proceed?
Thomas answered in the recording:
“Because Marcus has debts.”
Marcus:
“Shut up.”
Thomas:
“Vivian has exposure in Edward’s account.”
Vivian:
“Enough.”
Thomas:
“And Grant has signed documents he never read.”
Grant whispered a curse in the present.
Thomas had leverage over all three.
He manipulated them.
Margot said:
“I never agreed to this.”
Thomas:
“You don’t need to.”
Then:
“The nurse is the cleanest route. Silas trusts her. We make that trust look irrational.”
Elena felt her jaw tighten.
Margot:
“No violence.”
Thomas:
“I don’t care how Marcus gets the reaction.”
Marcus had then walked into Room 812 and slapped Elena.
Thomas did not order the slap explicitly.
But he built the trap and treated consequences as irrelevant.
The recording continued.
Arthur returned.
Thomas went quiet.
Then Arthur said:
“Thomas?”
A chair scraped.
Arthur:
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas:
“Protecting the company.”
Arthur:
“From Silas?”
Thomas:
“From all of you.”
The audio ended.
That was why Arthur had been drugged later.
He saw Thomas.
Could identify him.
The “fourth person” Silas suspected was not outside the family.
He was the quiet cousin no one considered an heir.
Lena issued alerts.
Thomas remained missing.
His accounts showed no recent activity.
But corporate systems recorded one remote access after he disappeared.
He opened A-Protection.
Not activated.
Opened.
Then downloaded one file.
AMELIA — INCIDENT.
Why?
Perhaps the document he had inserted was about to be exposed.
Evelyn compared hashes.
The current file differed from Charlotte’s original.
Thomas had altered it.
The false version stated:
Silas knew Marcus had threatened Amelia and concealed it to protect corporate reputation.
A devastating lie if treated as Charlotte’s authentic record.
Thomas planned to destroy Silas morally and legally after the trust opened.
Margot’s activation scheme would have released the false file.
Evelyn’s warnings had prevented it.
Silas looked toward Elena.
“One camera.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“One choice.”
“What?”
“You kept it on.”
She thought of Marcus’s slap.
Her instinct had been to react.
Remove herself.
Maybe tear the camera off because it pulled at her collar.
Instead she stayed.
Recorded.
Followed procedure.
That small decision preserved the conspiracy’s voice.
Then Lena received a call from hospital security.
Thomas had been located.
Not outside Atlanta.
Inside the hospital.
A badge registered to a maintenance contractor opened the restricted medical records archive.
Why would Thomas return?
Silas’s chart.
The competency evaluations.
If he could alter medical documentation, he might still trigger governance.
Security teams moved.
They found the archive door open.
Thomas gone.
One terminal active.
A document uploaded into Silas’s chart:
ACUTE COGNITIVE DECLINE — FAMILY REPORT.
Unsigned.
Not yet validated.
But prepared.
Beside it, another file.
NURSE ELENA BROOKS — CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Thomas was still trying to finish the original frame.
Then Elena noticed the upload time.
Eleven minutes in the future.
Scheduled.
More files might be queued.
Hospital IT stopped the process.
One final scheduled document remained.

Elena stared.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Silas looked confused.
Thomas had apparently planned to claim Elena’s relationship to Silas was not merely emotional.
Something about biological connection.
But why?
