Chapter 5 - Charlotte’s sister
The woman was not Charlotte.
Silas recognized that after the image was enhanced.
But the resemblance explained his reaction.
“Margot.”
“Who?” Elena asked.
“Charlotte’s younger sister.”
Margot Hale.
The Whitmore family rarely mentioned her.
Publicly, she died sixteen years earlier in a private plane crash over Montana.
No survivors.
Silas attended the memorial.
No body was recovered.
Now a woman resembling Margot had left the hospital boardroom using an unauthorized corridor.
Naomi called security.
The woman had registered under another name:
Margaret Hall.

“Margot might know whether it was real.”
Silas had always believed Charlotte and Margot stopped speaking after Amelia’s death.
Why?
Silas finally explained.
Amelia died at eleven during a family lake trip.
Charlotte blamed Silas.
Silas blamed himself.
Margot blamed the family security team.
The marriage survived publicly.
Privately, everything changed.
Charlotte became intensely protective of Marcus, Vivian, and Grant.
She created trusts.
Separate financial structures.
Backup guardianship plans.
After Charlotte died, Silas consolidated most of them.
Or thought he did.
Arthur Kane’s findings suggested one hidden structure survived.

Then the recovered body-camera audio yielded another fragment.
Arthur:
“The children believe this money is inheritance.”

No answer recovered.
Silas looked disturbed.
Charlotte may have created a hidden fund for some future event.
Her children later treated it as their private asset.
Marcus’s hospital coercion may have been about protecting access to that structure.
But Margot’s return suggested the original purpose mattered again.
Detective Lena Brooks from hospital-affiliated law enforcement liaison began coordinating with corporate investigators.
She asked Elena:
“Why were you wearing the body camera?”
“Hospital safety policy.”
“Did Silas know?”
“Yes.”
“Did his children?”
“They should have.”
“Would Margot?”
“No idea.”
Lena looked at the footage.
“The interesting thing is whoever disabled the server recording knew the camera model.”
Vivian had access to the boardroom.
Grant had system credentials.
But Margot had helped design Whitmore foundation technology projects years before her supposed death.
If she was alive, she may know more than everyone.
Then Arthur Kane was found.
Alive.
At a private clinic seventy miles away.
He had checked himself in after experiencing symptoms consistent with a drug interaction.
He insisted he had taken no new medication.
His bloodwork showed a sedative.
Not enough to kill.
Enough to confuse.
Enough to make him miss the corporate board meeting.
Someone did to Arthur what Marcus wanted to do legally to Silas:
Make him unreliable at exactly the right moment.
Arthur remembered drinking coffee in the hospital boardroom after meeting Silas.
Vivian was there.
Grant stopped by.
Then the older woman arrived.
Margot.
“She told me Charlotte had authorized everything.”
“What everything?”
“The offshore structure.”
“Did you believe her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Arthur looked toward Silas.
“Because Charlotte left me a letter twenty years ago.”
Silas stared.
“What letter?”
Arthur reached for his briefcase.
Gone.
His briefcase disappeared between the hospital and clinic.
Inside was Charlotte’s original letter.
The only document Arthur believed could prove whether Charlotte authorized the hidden fund.
Then Lena received a security image from the hospital parking garage.
