Chapter 9 - Grant breaks from the family
Grant met investigators at a law office.
Not a parking garage.
Not a secret warehouse.
He had finally understood that dramatic secrecy helped the wrong people.
He surrendered his phone voluntarily.
Then a thumb drive.
“I copied this from Vivian’s safe.”
Vivian had stored old Charlotte files alongside the physical recovery key.
One spreadsheet dated eight months before Amelia’s death.
Payments to:
Hale Protective Services.
Margot’s maiden-name company.
Private investigators.
A physician.
And an account labeled E.W.
Silas frowned.
“Who is E.W.?”
Grant did not know.
Another document:
AMELIA EDUCATION TRUST — ALTERNATE CUSTODY.
Silas stared.
Charlotte had prepared a plan for Amelia to live elsewhere.
“With whom?”
The page was incomplete.
But E.W. appeared again.
Maybe a proposed guardian.
Why would Charlotte plan to send Amelia away?
Grant found a letter Amelia wrote but apparently never sent.
Daddy,
Mom says I might stay with Aunt Margot’s friend because it will be safer.
Silas closed his eyes.
Safer from what?
The letter continued:
Marcus heard them talking and said I should stop asking about the papers.
The papers.
Not abuse.
Not a simple sibling fight.
Amelia had stumbled into something financial.
Charlotte and Margot were moving money.
Maybe planning to leave Silas.
Maybe protecting assets.
Then:
I saw Mom sign your name.
Silas stopped breathing.
Forgery.
Charlotte had been signing Silas’s name before the offshore fund existed.
Why?
A second line:
Aunt Margot said it was only until “Evelyn” agrees.
Evelyn.
E.W.
Investigators searched the Whitmore family network.
One Evelyn:
Evelyn Ward.
Charlotte’s college roommate.
Former attorney.
Later trust administrator.
Disappeared from public life twenty-four years ago.
Not dead.
Simply vanished.
Silas barely remembered her.
Grant found another clue.
Evelyn Ward had been named temporary guardian of Amelia in a draft filing.
Never submitted.
Charlotte may have planned to separate from Silas and take Amelia somewhere protected.
But then Amelia died.
Why did Marcus want her silent?
Maybe Charlotte’s plan would disrupt his own position.
At twelve, would he understand trusts?
Perhaps enough if adults involved him.
Margot certainly did.
Grant admitted something else.
“Margot has been talking to us for years.”
Silas’s face hardened.
“You knew she was alive?”
Grant nodded.
Marcus and Vivian too.
“Since when?”
“I was twenty.”
Silas looked devastated.
Grant continued.
“She told us she survived the plane crash because she never boarded.”
“What?”
Margot had arranged the flight.
Then changed plans at the last minute.
The plane crashed with two pilots and an assistant aboard.
The family assumed Margot was a passenger because her name appeared on the manifest.
She let them believe she died.
Why?
“She said Dad would take the Charlotte fund.”
Silas stared.
“I didn’t know it existed.”
“She said you eventually would.”
Margot spent years directing the siblings from outside the family.
Grant believed she protected Charlotte’s wishes.
Marcus believed she was the true guardian of their inheritance.
Vivian treated her like a private strategist.
Silas whispered:
“She raised them after Charlotte died without me knowing.”
Emotionally, perhaps.
Financially, certainly.
Margot had shaped them.
The framing plan against Elena carried her fingerprints.
Grant gave investigators the encrypted messaging app.
One recent instruction from Margot:
Silas must be declared impaired before A-Protection converts.
Grant:
Why now?
Margot:
Because Evelyn is alive.
Everyone stopped.
Evelyn Ward.
Alive.
Still relevant.
Grant looked at Elena.
“That’s what Amelia was trying to tell him.”
Silas asked:
“Where is Evelyn?”
Grant shook his head.
“Margot says nobody knows.”
Then a new message appeared on Grant’s surrendered device.
From Margot.
YOU MADE A MISTAKE.
Grant went pale.
A second message:
EVELYN IS NOT THE PERSON YOU SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT.
Then:
ASK SILAS WHO REALLY SIGNED AMELIA’S CUSTODY FILE.
Silas stared.
He had never signed any custody file.
