Chapter 2 - thirty-seven minutes before the slap

Hospital legal counsel secured Elena’s camera before anyone played it.
Marcus objected immediately.
“It contains private family communications.”
The board chair, Dr. Naomi Spencer, stared at him.
“You entered a monitored clinical environment and assaulted an employee.”
“I reacted because my father was being exploited.”
“Elena’s camera may tell us whether that is true.”
Marcus looked toward his attorney.
Vivian whispered something to Grant.
Elena noticed Grant checking his phone.
Deleting?
Maybe.
Hospital security took it for preservation after legal counsel intervened.
The camera footage began at 6:42 a.m.
Elena entering Silas’s room.
Medication.
Vitals.
Breakfast.
Nothing dramatic.
At 8:11, Silas asked Elena whether his children had called.
“No.”
At 8:14, he said quietly:
“They will once they know what I changed.”
The boardroom went still.
Marcus leaned forward.
“What change?”
Elena looked at him.
“You tell us.”
She had heard Silas say it but assumed he meant medication or visitor restrictions.
The footage continued.
At 8:36, Marcus appeared outside the room.
Not inside.
The camera captured him through the partly open door speaking to Vivian.
Marcus:
“Grant gets him emotional. I’ll get the competency line.”
Vivian:
“And if he refuses?”
Marcus:
“He won’t. Not after we mention the nurse.”
Grant’s voice:
“She’s perfect. Young enough to look ambitious.”
Elena stared.
She had not heard that conversation from inside the bathroom where she had been helping Silas wash.
The board chair paused the footage.
Marcus stood.
“This is being taken completely out of context.”
Naomi replied:
“Sit down.”
He did.
The footage resumed.
Grant:
“What if she fights back?”
Marcus:
“Better.”
Vivian:
“Marcus, don’t be stupid.”
Marcus:
“I said pressure her. Not anything that leaves evidence.”
Then the three walked away.
Thirty-seven minutes later they returned and Marcus slapped Elena.
The boardroom became silent.
Elena looked at Marcus.
“Not anything that leaves evidence?”
His attorney requested the playback stop.
Hospital legal counsel disagreed.
The camera belonged to the hospital’s staff-safety pilot system, and the review related directly to an employee assault and patient safety.
The next section showed Silas before the heirs entered.
He asked Elena:
“If my children accuse you of wanting money, what will you say?”
“I’ll say I want them to stop upsetting my patient.”
Silas smiled.
“That’s why I chose you.”
Elena turned toward the screen.
“Chose me for what?”
No answer yet.
The heirs entered seconds later.
The slap played clearly.
Grant’s selective recording began only afterward.
Marcus saying:
“Perfect. Now we have proof that he’s no longer of sound mind.”
Then Silas:
“You planned this.”
Marcus:
“You’re confused, Dad.”
Silas:
“I was confused when I trusted you.”
Naomi paused.
Vivian’s face had gone pale.
Grant looked toward the doors.
The security guards had moved away from Elena.
Now they stood closer to the Whitmore heirs.
But the footage contained something else.
After Elena activated the nurse-call system, Marcus leaned toward Silas.
His voice was low.
Grant’s phone did not capture it.
Elena’s microphone did.
“Sign the competency acknowledgment today, or the board gets the offshore file.”
Silas whispered:
“You wouldn’t.”
Marcus answered:
“Try me.”
The boardroom froze.
Naomi looked toward Marcus.
“What offshore file?”
He said nothing.
Elena looked at Silas’s hospital attorney, Jonathan Vale, seated near the end of the table.
Jonathan’s expression changed.
He knew.
“What is it?” Elena asked.
Jonathan closed his folder.
“That isn’t hospital business.”
Marcus smiled slightly.
Then Elena’s camera captured Silas’s reply.
“Marcus, that file doesn’t ruin me.”
A pause.
“It ruins you.”
May you like
Marcus’s smile vanished again.
👉 Marcus had threatened his hospitalized father with an “offshore file,” but Silas’s response suggested the secret evidence actually implicated Marcus himself.
