Chapter 1

Boy Refuses Strange Thanksgiving Steak Before His Mother Exposes a Terrifying Family Secret.

Ethan did not scream when he pushed the steak away.

That was what made everyone stop.

My seven-year-old son sat at the Thanksgiving table in his gray hoodie, tears gathering under his lashes, his small hands trembling beside a plate no one had questioned until he whispered the sentence that split our family open.

“Dad… my steak smells like medicine.”

Daniel, my husband, had been standing near the table holding Buddy, our golden retriever, back from the food.

He leaned toward Ethan first with confusion.

Then concern.

The dining room was warm with candlelight, turkey at the center of the table, plates full, windows glowing with late Iowa daylight, the American flag outside moving faintly in the cold November wind.

My mother-in-law Patricia lowered her gravy spoon.

Not gently.

Irritated.

“Stop being picky and eat.”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

Before I could reach him, Tyler, Megan’s eleven-year-old son, leaned across the table with his fork.

“Then I’ll take it.”

The fork hooked the edge of Ethan’s steak.

And suddenly, I saw the plate.

Not the steak.

The plate.

Blue rim.

Small chip near the edge.

The same plate Megan had carried from the kitchen while everyone else was laughing.

My chair scraped backward so hard it hit the wall.

“No!”

Tyler froze.

I knocked the fork from his hand before it reached his mouth.

My own voice came out raw.

“Megan put something on that plate.”

The room stopped breathing.

Megan’s smile disappeared for less than one second.

But I saw it.

Daniel moved instantly.

One hand caught Tyler’s wrist.

The other pulled Buddy back as the dog sniffed toward the tablecloth.

“Nobody touches it. Megan, don’t move.”

Megan slowly stood.

Her eyes moved toward the kitchen.

Then the back door.

That was when I knew she recognized the danger too.

Ethan sobbed against my sweater.

Daniel stared at his sister across the Thanksgiving table.

And Buddy licked one tiny drop from the tablecloth before Daniel pulled him away.

Megan went pale.

Not confused.

Not offended.

Terrified.
