Chapter 9

Dr. Mills arrived in six minutes.

He came through the back door wearing a winter coat over scrubs, medical bag in one hand, face calm in the way emergency doctors learn to be calm before they understand the whole disaster.

He checked Ethan first.

Then Tyler.

Then Buddy, as much as a human doctor could observe a dog while telling Daniel to contact the emergency vet.

He did not touch the covered plate directly.

He asked for gloves.

I brought them.

Megan watched every movement.

Too closely.

Dr. Mills looked at Daniel.

“Who prepared this plate?”

The room went silent.

Daniel’s eyes stayed on Megan.

She lifted her chin.

“Everyone helped.”

“That is not what I asked,” Dr. Mills said.

Patricia whispered, “Megan carried it in.”

Megan turned on her mother.

Patricia flinched.

There it was again.

Fear.

Old.

Automatic.

Daniel looked devastated.

“Mom.”

Patricia’s eyes filled.

“I thought she was just angry.”

“About what?”

Patricia looked toward Ethan.

Then away.

“Megan said Lauren made everyone think Ethan was special.”

I felt cold.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

My son was seven.

Special, to Megan, meant protected.

Loved.

Believed.

The things no one had apparently given Emily when it mattered.

Megan’s voice shook.

“You’re all acting like I’m a monster.”

No one answered.

That silence was different from the old family silence.

This one did not protect her.

It waited for truth.

Dr. Mills asked Daniel to preserve the food and call appropriate authorities if they believed intentional contamination was possible.

Megan laughed sharply.

“Appropriate authorities? At Thanksgiving?”

Daniel looked at the covered plate.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Tyler.

Then at Buddy.

His face changed in a way I had never seen before.

Brother ended.

Father began.

“Megan,” he said, voice low, “what did you put on my son’s plate?”

She did not answer.

Her eyes went toward the kitchen again.

Then the back door.

Then Tyler.

Not denial.

Calculation.

And that was where the room truly panicked.
