Chapter 7

I did not know what was on the steak.
I still do not.
Not that moment.
Not enough to name it.
And I will not pretend a mother’s fear is the same as a lab report.
But I knew it did not belong near my son.
Daniel grabbed a clean serving lid and covered the plate without touching the steak.
Then he looked at Tyler.
“Move away from the table.”
Tyler did immediately.
For once, he did not argue.
Buddy whined softly.
Daniel pulled him farther back.
Patricia stared at Megan like she was seeing her daughter through a cracked mirror.
“Megan,” she said, “tell me this is not like before.”
Megan’s face twisted.
“Don’t you dare.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“Like before?”
Patricia’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know.”
Megan laughed.
“You knew enough.”
The sentence landed with awful weight.
I pulled Ethan closer.
His tears had slowed, but his body trembled.
“Mom,” he whispered, “is Buddy okay?”
“I don’t know yet, sweetheart.”
That was the only honest answer.
Megan looked toward the kitchen again.
Daniel said, “What’s in there?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why do you keep looking at it?”
She did not answer.
Patricia reached for the back of a chair.
“She was only fourteen when Emily got sick.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Are you defending her right now?”
“No.”
“You are explaining.”
“I’m saying I didn’t understand.”
Megan snapped, “You understood enough to make everyone shut up.”
Patricia recoiled.
The family secret was no longer one event.
It was a chain.
One child harmed.
One plate washed.
One mother silenced.
One son told not to ask.
One daughter protected from accountability until she grew into a woman who still believed the table would obey her.
Daniel took out his phone.
Megan’s eyes widened.
“Who are you calling?”
He did not answer.
She stepped forward.
He lifted one hand.
“Megan, don’t move.”
This time, his voice was not just protective.
May you like
It was final.
