Chapter 6

Patricia sat down when I said Emily’s name.
Not because she wanted to.
Because her knees seemed to forget how to stand.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What does Emily have to do with this?”
Patricia’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Megan’s eyes sharpened.
“Lauren is inventing things.”
“No,” I said. “I’m remembering.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Remembering what?”
I kept one hand on Ethan’s shoulder.
He was crying against my sweater, but listening.
Too much.
Children always hear more than adults plan to explain.
“When I was sixteen, Emily got sick after a family meal.”
Patricia whispered, “Stop.”
“No.”
“Lauren.”
“No, Patricia.”
The room went silent except for Buddy’s collar jingling as Daniel held him back.
I continued.
“Everyone said she ate something she shouldn’t have. Then her family moved away, and no one ever said her name again.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Not in shock.
In recognition.
He remembered more than he had allowed himself to know.
Megan laughed once.
A brittle sound.
“So now I’m responsible for a childhood accident?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You implied it.”
“No,” Daniel said.
We both turned to him.
His eyes were on Megan.
“She did.”
Megan’s face tightened.
Daniel swallowed.
“I remember you washing a plate before the ambulance came.”
Patricia made a small sound.
Megan’s voice went cold.
“You were seventeen and panicking.”
“I remember Mom telling me not to mention it.”
Patricia looked away.
The turkey sat in the center of the table, untouched now, steam fading into the candlelight.
The American flag outside moved gently beyond the window.
A perfect Thanksgiving scene around a secret finally breathing.
Tyler whispered, “Who’s Emily?”
No one answered.
That was the tragedy.
Children were always the last to be told what adults had taught them to survive.
Megan stepped backward.
Daniel blocked her again.
“I said don’t move.”
Her composure cracked.
“Then get that dog away from the table.”

That sentence confirmed more than she meant it to.
