Chapter 4

Ethan noticed before the prayer ended.

His nose wrinkled.

His eyes moved from the steak to me.

I was bowing my head, listening to Patricia thank God for family, abundance, and “children who learn gratitude.”

That last part was aimed at Ethan.

It always was.

When we lifted our heads, Ethan had not touched his fork.

Daniel smiled at him from across the table.

“Buddy is hoping you quit early, pal.”

Ethan did not laugh.

He pushed the plate away two inches.

Megan watched.

So did I.

“What is it?” I asked.

He whispered, “It smells weird.”

Patricia sighed.

“Everything smells weird to that boy.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“We don’t force food.”

Patricia gave him a look.

“In my house, children tried what they were served.”

“This is our house,” Daniel said.

The room tightened.

Patricia disliked being reminded that Daniel had grown past her ownership.

Megan’s fingers tightened around her napkin.

Tyler, bored and hungry, leaned toward Ethan.

“I’ll eat it.”

Ethan shook his head quickly.

“No.”

That frightened me more than his tears.

He was not being picky.

He was trying to stop someone else.

Daniel stood and came around Buddy, who was sniffing near Ethan’s chair.

“Ethan, tell me.”

My son looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at the steak.

“Dad… my steak smells like medicine.”

Every adult heard it.

Every adult reacted differently.

Daniel leaned closer.

Patricia became annoyed.

Tyler became opportunistic.

Megan became still.

Completely still.

That was when the memory of Emily hit me.

Not as a thought.

As a physical wave.

A holiday table.

A child.

A smell adults dismissed.

A family that never spoke of what happened afterward.

I looked at Megan.

Her face was controlled, but her eyes were fixed on Tyler’s fork as he reached for the steak.

I moved before I understood everything.
