Chapter 3

The ring disappeared thirty minutes before the first dance.

Chloe had been showing it off all evening.

A diamond oval surrounded by smaller stones, bright enough to catch every chandelier in the ballroom.

She lifted her hand for photographs.

Held it over champagne glasses.

Pressed it against her cheek while laughing with bridesmaids.

By dessert, she claimed it was gone.

The first panic was believable.

The second was not.

Chloe turned toward me too quickly.

Like she had practiced.

“My ring,” she said, voice trembling loudly enough for nearby tables to hear.

Dominic stood beside me.

“What happened?”

Chloe’s eyes filled instantly.

“I had it. I know I had it.”

Eleanor rushed over.

Guests began turning in their chairs.

The music softened.

Then stopped.

Chloe looked at my purse.

Not the floor.

Not the table.

Not her bridesmaids.

My purse.

“She was near it.”

I blinked.

“Who?”

“You.”

I almost laughed because the accusation was so absurd.

Then Eleanor said, “Open your bag.”

The room shifted.

That is how public cruelty begins.

Not all at once.

With one request that sounds reasonable if you ignore where it points.

“No,” I said.

Dominic touched my elbow.

“Vivienne.”

I looked at him.

“Don’t.”

“It will clear things up.”

I stared.

“You believe this?”

He did not answer quickly enough.

Chloe stepped forward and grabbed my handbag.

I reached for it.

She yanked it open, dumping everything onto the marble floor.

Lipstick.

Phone.

Keys.

A folded program.

Small emergency sewing kit.

No ring.

But Chloe was not done.

She looked me over slowly, eyes bright with performance.

“Search her.”

The ballroom gasped.

Eleanor said, “Chloe, honey—”

But she did not sound horrified.

She sounded eager for permission.

Chloe pointed at my dress.

“She could have hidden it anywhere.”

Dominic said nothing.

That silence gave them room.

And they took it.
