Chapter 9

Dominic finally understood when the wedding planner approached me instead of Chloe.

She moved carefully, hands visible, voice low.

“Mrs. Whitaker, are you physically hurt?”

Chloe gasped.

“She is not the victim here.”

The planner did not look at her.

I answered, “No.”

Then corrected myself.

“I don’t know.”

Because humiliation is injury too, even when it leaves no bruise.

The planner nodded.

“Would you like a private room?”

I looked toward my father’s voice on the phone.

“Not yet.”

Dominic’s phone buzzed again.

This time, he closed his eyes.

Eleanor leaned toward him.

“What does it say?”

He did not answer.

Natalie—no, not Natalie.

Wrong family.

A bridesmaid in pale blue whispered near the head table, “Why is security outside?”

The word security passed through the ballroom like a draft.

Chloe’s face went pale.

The guest with the silver purse stopped breathing visibly.

Dominic looked at the closed double doors.

Then at me.

“What did your father send?”

“My father told me to stay here.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I know.”

His face hardened.

For a second, I saw the man behind the tuxedo.

Not shocked husband.

Not helpless son.

A man furious that a woman he failed to protect still had access to protection.

“You should have come to me first,” he said.

I stared at him.

“I did.”

He swallowed.

“You told me to let them search me.”

The sentence landed.

Guests who had recorded everything lowered their phones slightly.

Not out of shame.

Out of recognition.

Dominic had made his choice publicly.

Now he wanted the consequences handled privately.

I held the torn lace against myself and stood taller.

The ballroom doors remained closed.

My father stayed on the line.

And Dominic looked at me like he was finally beginning to realize the missing ring was no longer the most dangerous object in the room.
