Chapter 6

My father answered on the first ring.

He always did.

That was the thing Dominic never understood.

He thought power was measured by who entered a room.

My father’s power often began before doors opened.

“Vivienne?”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that meant he had heard my breathing before my words.

“Dad… it’s time.”

Across from me, Chloe laughed.

“Time for what?”

Eleanor was not laughing.

Her face had changed.

She did not know everything about my family, but she knew enough to fear tone.

Dominic reached for his phone as it began vibrating in his tuxedo pocket.

He glanced down.

The blood drained from his face.

Then another buzz.

Then another.

His eyes snapped toward me.

“What did you do?”

I did not answer.

My father spoke through the phone.

“Stay exactly where you are.”

The wedding planner received an alert at the same time.

Her phone lit silently in her hand.

No readable text.

No dramatic reveal.

Only her posture changed.

She turned toward the closed double doors of the ballroom.

Two servers near the side entrance stopped moving.

A manager appeared near the wall.

The music had already died, but now the entire room felt muted.

Like the building itself had inhaled.

Dominic stepped toward me.

“Vivienne, tell him to stop.”

That was almost funny.

He did not know what had started.

Neither did I fully.

That was how my father worked when I asked for help.

He did not send comfort first.

He sent containment.

Chloe looked between Dominic and me.

“Who is she calling?”

No one answered.

Eleanor’s grip tightened around the torn fabric in her hand until her knuckles whitened.

The guest with the silver purse moved one step toward the exit.

The wedding planner saw.

So did I.

She did not stop her yet.

Because the call was still unfolding.

And someone, somewhere behind those closed doors, had just begun checking the version of events Chloe thought she controlled.
