Chapter 5

Eleanor’s hand closed around my wrist.

Her diamond bracelet pressed cold against my skin.

“Honest people have nothing to hide.”

That sentence made something old and furious rise in me.

My father had once told me that dangerous people love simple morals.

Honest people have nothing to hide.

Good wives obey.

Family comes first.

Only guilty people refuse.

Every phrase was a clean white cloth thrown over dirt.

I twisted my wrist free.

“Do not touch me again.”

Eleanor’s eyes widened.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she had not expected a boundary after getting this far.

Chloe still held a torn strip of my gown.

Her veil trembled with her breathing.

Dominic’s mother looked at him.

“Do something.”

He looked at me.

Not at them.

At me.

As if I were the one creating the problem by refusing to be handled.

“Just let them search you,” he said.

The ballroom went quieter.

There are sentences that end relationships instantly.

Not because they are loud.

Because they reveal the foundation.

Dominic did not say, I know my wife.

He did not say, Stop touching her.

He did not say, This is over.

He chose the easiest path for himself and called it peace.

The heartbreak disappeared from my face.

I felt it leave.

Cold certainty replaced it.

I bent carefully, gathered the torn fabric with one hand, and picked up my phone with the other.

The wedding planner’s eyes met mine.

Then flicked up.

A blinking security camera above the entrance.

Then sideways.

A nervous female guest near the exit, clutching a silver purse.

The planner saw something.

Maybe enough.

Maybe not.

I saw enough to know I was not the only person in that ballroom holding back truth.

Chloe scoffed.

“Oh, are you calling someone to cry?”

I looked at the glassy marble floor, the flowers, the chandeliers, the phones, the husband who had failed in front of all of them.

Then I called my father.
