Chapter 8

Chloe began to panic when the doors did not open.

That sounds strange.

But guilty rooms become afraid of closed doors.

She had expected chaos.

A search.

A humiliation.

A ring found in the right place, or at least enough suspicion to ruin me before dinner service resumed.

She had not expected stillness.

The ballroom staff had stopped guests from leaving too quickly.

Not with force.

With polite words.

A champagne tray placed in the right walkway.

A manager asking people to remain seated while “the matter is reviewed.”

The wedding planner near the entrance looked almost expressionless now.

Professional.

Focused.

The kind of woman who had learned that rich people often mistake events for private kingdoms until cameras remind them otherwise.

Chloe lifted her chin.

“This is my wedding.”

No one answered.

She turned to Dominic.

“Do something.”

He looked at her.

Then at me.

Then at his phone.

“Chloe…”

That hesitation destroyed her confidence more than any accusation could have.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Eleanor stepped between them.

“Enough. We will not be intimidated by theatrics.”

My father heard that through the phone.

He asked, “Who said that?”

I answered, “Eleanor.”

Eleanor’s face tightened.

Dominic looked alarmed.

“Vivienne, stop naming people.”

That sentence made several guests look at him.

Because innocent people do not usually fear being named.

The guest with the silver purse shifted again.

Her hand was white around the clasp.

The wedding planner watched but still did not move.

Neither did I.

I understood now that the truth was not ready to enter the room.

Only pressure was.

Pressure on Chloe.

Pressure on Eleanor.

Pressure on Dominic.

Pressure on whoever thought they could use my body as a distraction from a missing diamond.

My father said, “You are doing well.”

I almost cried then.

Not when the dress ripped.

Not when Dominic failed me.

Then.

Because someone outside that room believed me before I proved anything.
