Chapter 3

Adrian Blackwell loved witnesses when he controlled them.
That was why the cathedral mattered.
He could have married Isabella at a private estate.
He could have chosen an intimate ceremony.
Instead, he wanted chandeliers, cameras, donors, and guests powerful enough to make the marriage feel irreversible.
A public bride becomes harder to disappear from a story.
That was what Adrian believed.
If five hundred people watched Isabella say “I do,” then any complaint afterward could be framed as regret, instability, drama, or greed.
He underestimated what a public altar could do to him.
Isabella understood his vanity by then.
She knew he would not tolerate disorder in front of elite guests.
She knew he would smile through discomfort until the room turned against him.
She knew he would only panic when reputation itself became unstable.
So she waited.
Through the music.
Through the flower girls.
Through the whispered praise.
Through Adrian’s soft smile when she reached him.
He leaned close as if offering affection.
Instead, he whispered, “Behave.”
One word.
Small.
Cruel.
Familiar.
Isabella looked at his boutonniere, perfectly white against his black tuxedo.
Then she looked beyond him.
Detective Marcus Reed stood near the side aisle in uniform, calm and alert.
The second officer stood farther back.
They had not come to make a scene.
They had come because Isabella had given them enough to watch the groom carefully.
Adrian noticed them too late.
The vows began.
The officiant spoke about love, protection, honor, and trust.
Isabella almost laughed at the last word.
Instead, when asked if she came freely, she stepped backward.
Her hands moved to the lace fastenings at her shoulders.
A horrified murmur rose.
Adrian’s smile died.
“Isabella,” he whispered.
She did not stop.
The gown fell enough for the truth to become visible.

And the cathedral saw what the Blackwell name had covered.
