Chapter 5

Detective Marcus Reed had not wanted Isabella to confront Adrian at the altar.

He told her that twice.

“Safer ways exist,” he said.

Isabella answered, “Safer for whom?”

Reed was not offended.

He had worked enough abuse cases to understand that survival rarely looks neat from the outside.

Still, he had insisted on boundaries.

No physical provocation.

No uncontrolled confrontation.

No revealing evidence before officers secured the scene.

No turning trauma into spectacle.

Isabella agreed.

But she refused to cancel the wedding quietly.

“His whole defense is that I’m unstable,” she told Reed. “If I disappear before the ceremony, he controls the story by dinner.”

Reed could not deny that.

So they planned a narrow intervention.

Enough evidence to stop Adrian from leaving with her.

Enough witnesses to prevent immediate denial.

Enough restraint to avoid exposing every protected file before investigators could preserve it properly.

The voice recorder was the first piece.

It contained a threat.

Not every threat Adrian had made.

Not the whole pattern.

But enough.

A threat tied to the wedding.

A threat that made his anger at the altar legally dangerous instead of merely ugly.

When Reed lifted the evidence-bagged recorder, Adrian changed.

His body stopped fighting.

His face went pale.

He knew that device.

He remembered the night.

He remembered what he had said when he thought Isabella was too afraid to record him.

“Your recorded threat proves enough,” Reed said.

The cathedral held its breath.

Adrian looked at Isabella with hatred now.

But beneath it was calculation.

He was already wondering how much she had.

Which files.

Which dates.

Which accounts.

Which secrets tied to money no one in the cathedral fully understood yet.

Then Isabella lifted the USB drive.

And Adrian’s calculation became fear.
