Chapter 8

Isabella did not feel brave.

That surprised her.

People would later call her brave because people like clean words after ugly scenes.

But standing at the altar with bruises visible, gown half fallen, officers restraining the man she almost married, she did not feel brave.

She felt cold.

Focused.

Terrified in a way that had finally become useful.

Her hands did not shake because she had already shaken for months.

In bathrooms.

Closets.

Hotel rooms.

Behind locked doors while Adrian entertained guests downstairs.

She had already spent her trembling.

Now she spent truth.

Detective Reed shifted slightly closer.

“Isabella,” he said quietly, “you don’t have to say more.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

That mattered too.

She was not being pushed.

Not by police.

Not by guests.

Not by revenge.

This was her choice.

Adrian’s mother stood in the second row, white-faced and silent.

His business partner stared at the marble floor.

Two donors whispered fiercely near the aisle.

A woman Isabella had met once at a charity luncheon began crying without making a sound.

But Isabella looked only at Adrian.

“I wore the dress you chose,” she said softly, beyond the locked dialogue of the public moment, not loudly enough for every guest.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I smiled when you told me to.”

His eyes flicked to Reed.

“I walked down the aisle exactly the way you wanted.”

The USB remained between her fingers.

“And still, you missed the pocket.”

Adrian’s face twitched.

There it was.

Fear again.

Not of scandal.

Of evidence.
