Chapter 9

The cathedral had become divided into two kinds of silence.

The silence of horror.

And the silence of calculation.

The horrified guests looked at Isabella’s bruises and understood abuse.

They saw a woman who had used the only public moment left to stop a private nightmare.

The calculating guests looked at the USB drive and understood risk.

They were the ones who looked away from Adrian.

The ones whose hands tightened around programs.

The ones whose faces said they had heard rumors about Blackwell money but had always preferred invitations over answers.

Adrian saw them.

His panic deepened.

“You don’t know what’s on that,” he said.

Isabella held his gaze.

“I know enough.”

Detective Reed looked at the USB.

“We’ll preserve it.”

Adrian’s eyes snapped to him.

“You can’t just take privileged material.”

Reed’s voice stayed level.

“No one said privileged.”

Adrian realized the mistake too late.

He had named a defense before anyone had named the contents.

A quiet sound moved through the guests.

Not a gasp.

Worse.

Recognition.

Isabella lowered her chin slightly.

She was tired now.

The adrenaline that held her upright was beginning to thin.

But she would not sit.

Not yet.

Not before Adrian understood one final thing.

She had not only escaped the wedding.

She had carried with her the thread connected to his hidden fortune.

Not the whole tapestry.

Not yet.

May you like

But enough thread that pulling it might undo everything he had wrapped around his name.
