Chapter 4

The room did not know where to look.

That was part of the horror.

No one wanted to stare.

No one wanted to look away.

Isabella stood carefully, respectfully, shoulders squared, her face turned toward the guests rather than lowering in shame.

She refused to act like the bruises belonged to her disgrace.

They belonged to Adrian’s.

Her gown pooled around her arms and on the floor. The lace trembled slightly in her hand, but her voice stayed steady.

“No. Let them see what you did.”

Adrian’s outrage came fast because outrage was easier than fear.

“Those bruises prove nothing!”

There it was.

Not What bruises?

Not Who hurt you?

Not Are you alright?

Those bruises prove nothing.

The sentence moved through the cathedral like a confession wearing the wrong clothes.

Detective Reed tightened his hold, not violently, just enough to keep Adrian from lunging toward her.

The second officer secured his other arm.

Guests shifted in the pews.

A man near the front whispered, “Did he just say—”

His wife gripped his sleeve.

Isabella did not look at the crowd long.

She looked at Adrian.

That mattered.

She wanted him to understand this was not a collapse.

It was a choice.

She reached into the inner lining of her gown.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

He had searched her purse before the ceremony.

Checked her phone.

Controlled the bridal suite.

Approved who entered.

He had not thought to search the dress he had insisted she wear.

The gown he chose for his perfect wife had become the place she hid the truth.
