Chapter 1

Brother Strands His Sister and Her Children Overseas to Steal Her House—Then Opens the Door and Finds Them Waiting With Police.

Ryan opened my front door with the stolen keys in his hand and found me standing inside my own house.

For three full seconds, my brother did not move.

His navy polo shirt was still neat from the flight home. His hair was combed. His face carried the relaxed arrogance of a man who believed the crime was already finished.

Then he saw Eli beside me with his navy backpack still on.

Then Sophie in her pink outfit, clutching my blazer.

Then the house-shaped keychain raised between my fingers at eye level.

I smiled.

“Looking for the keys you stole?”

Ryan’s mouth opened.

Behind me, our parents stood in the hallway of my Naperville home.

My mother Diane had been confident ten minutes earlier.

My father Richard had been shouting about ownership.

Now both of them looked like people watching a locked safe open from the inside.

Ryan stared at me like I was impossible.

“How did you get back here?”

I stepped forward, forcing him backward over the threshold without touching him.

Eli stayed close to my side.

Sophie’s little fingers tightened in my cream blazer.

I held Ryan’s gaze.

“The embassy recovered our passports—and airport cameras recorded everything.”

My mother rushed forward.

“This house belongs to Ryan now.”

I lowered the keys.

Then I looked toward the adjoining room.

Ryan followed my gaze.

That was when Detective Cole stepped into the hallway holding the property-transfer folder Ryan had tried to file that morning.

Two uniformed officers stood behind him.

Detective Cole looked directly at my brother.

“No. The deed is frozen, and Ryan is under arrest.”

Ryan backed into the exterior wall.

For once, he had no airport gate to hide behind.

No stolen passports.

No forged signature.

No parents lying for him.
