Chapter 6

Waiting for Ryan was worse than confronting him.
The house felt too quiet.
Eli sat on the stairs with his backpack still on, refusing to take it off because he said, “We might need to leave fast.”
That sentence broke something in me.
Children should not have escape plans for their own home.
Sophie stayed pressed against my side, one hand gripping the hem of my blazer.
My parents stood under police supervision deeper in the hallway.
Diane kept whispering to Richard.
Richard kept telling her to stop.
Detective Cole examined the transfer packet on my dining table.
Laura had sent originals, timestamps, signature comparisons, and copies of Daniel’s estate protections.
Daniel had been thorough.
The house could not be transferred without a notarized in-person signature, verified identification, and a waiting period if dependent children lived in the property.
Ryan’s forged packet tried to bypass all three.
Detective Cole said, “He planned this before the trip.”
My mother snapped, “He was trying to help.”
I turned toward her.
“By stealing our passports?”
She looked at the floor.
My father said, “You were never practical about money.”
I stared at him.
“Daniel’s money?”
“Our family’s future.”
There it was.
The sentence beneath every lie.
To them, Daniel’s house, Daniel’s savings, Daniel’s protection for his children had become “family future.”
Not Eli’s future.
Not Sophie’s.
Ryan’s.
Diane lifted her chin.
“You can’t maintain this place alone.”
“I have been maintaining it alone.”
“With luck.”
“With work.”
“With insurance Daniel paid for.”
“With legal protections he created because he knew you would try exactly this.”
My father’s face hardened.
“He always turned you against us.”
“No.”
“He saw you clearly.”
That hurt them more.
Good.
A car pulled into the driveway.
Eli stood.
Sophie whimpered.
I knelt quickly.
“Look at me.”
Both children did.
“This is our home.”
“No one gets to make us feel like guests here.”
Eli nodded.
Sophie tried.
I stood with the house keys in my hand.
The front doorknob turned.
The black door opened.
Ryan stepped in with the confidence of a man returning to stolen property.

Then he saw me.
