Chapter 8

My parents were not arrested that day.
That angered Eli.
He watched Ryan being led to the patrol car and then turned toward Diane and Richard.
“What about them?”
My mother flinched.
Not because she had hurt him.
Because a child had spoken to her without fear.
Detective Cole crouched slightly.
“We are still investigating what each person did.”
Eli’s jaw tightened.
“They helped.”
“Yes,” Detective Cole said.
“And we will look at that carefully.”
Carefully was not satisfying.
But it was honest.
My parents were instructed not to remain in the house.
They protested.
Of course they did.
Richard said he had belongings there.
He did not.
Diane said the children needed grandparents during trauma.
Sophie whispered, “No, I don’t.”
My mother looked like she had been slapped.
I did not correct my daughter.
The officers escorted my parents outside while Detective Cole stayed behind to finish the evidence log.
After they left, the house felt unfamiliar.
Not unsafe exactly.
Violated.
Daniel’s desk drawers were open.
The dining table was covered in forged papers.
A suitcase Ryan had brought sat near the stairs, as if he planned to move in before the kids’ shoes were even unpacked.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I made grilled cheese.
That sounds ridiculous.
But children returning from fear need ordinary things.
Bread.
Cheese.
Warm plates.
The kitchen light.
Sophie ate half a sandwich and fell asleep at the table.
Eli did not eat.
He stared at the front door.
“Will Uncle Ryan come back?”
“No.”
“Will Grandma and Grandpa?”
“Not unless I allow it.”
“Will you?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He nodded once.
Then asked, “Did Dad know?”
The question took my breath.
“Know what?”
“That they were bad.”
I sat beside him.
“He knew they wanted things that didn’t belong to them.”
Eli looked toward Daniel’s desk.
“That’s why he made papers?”
“Yes.”
Eli’s eyes filled.
“I wish he was here.”
I pulled him into my arms.
“Me too.”
For a long time, we sat in the kitchen with Sophie asleep beside us and the forged deed still lying on the dining table.
Our house had been attacked.
But we were inside it.
Together.
May you like
That mattered.
