Chapter 7

Ryan’s face went through every stage of guilt except remorse.
Shock.
Calculation.
Anger.
Fear.
Then false concern.
“Mara.”
He spread his hands.
“You scared us.”
I held up the house-shaped keychain.
“Looking for the keys you stole?”
He glanced behind me.
Saw the children.
Saw our parents.
Saw Detective Cole’s shadow in the adjoining room but not his face.
“How did you get back here?”
The question came out too fast.
Too honest.
I stepped forward.
“The embassy recovered our passports—and airport cameras recorded everything.”
Ryan’s eyes flicked toward our parents.
Diane rushed forward.
“This house belongs to Ryan now.”
Detective Cole stepped into view.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“The deed is frozen, and Ryan is under arrest.”
Ryan backed into the doorframe.
“For what?”
Detective Cole opened the folder.
“Theft of travel documents, suspected fraud, attempted property transfer by forged authorization, and child endangerment related to stranding two minors overseas.”
Ryan’s mouth opened.
No sound came.
Then he looked at me.
“You’re really doing this?”
That was the family’s favorite sentence.
As if consequences were something I invented.
As if the crime only became real when I refused to absorb it quietly.
“No,” I said.
“You did this.”
An officer moved behind him.
Ryan lifted his hands higher.
“Wait. I can explain.”
Eli stepped slightly in front of Sophie.
My nine-year-old son was trying to shield his sister from his uncle.
I would remember that longer than Ryan’s arrest.
Detective Cole asked, “Did you take Mara Bennett’s passports in Lisbon?”
“No.”
“Did you file this transfer packet?”
Ryan hesitated.
“On her behalf.”
“With her consent?”
He looked at me.
The old Ryan might have expected me to look away.
I did not.
“No,” I said.
Ryan’s face twisted.
“You were going to lose the house eventually.”
The room went silent.
Even Diane stopped breathing.
There it was.
The motive without decoration.
Detective Cole nodded once.
That was enough.
The officer reached for Ryan’s wrists.
Sophie buried her face in my side.
I wrapped one arm around her and one around Eli.
Ryan whispered, “Mom, do something.”
Diane did not move.

For once, no one could.
