Chapter 5

Detective Cole was already inside my house when we arrived.
That was Laura’s idea.
She said, “Do not confront them alone.”
I said, “I have my children.”
She said, “Exactly.”
The Naperville police had been notified after airport security confirmed suspected document theft and after Laura provided the forged property packet.
Detective Cole met us at a side entrance.
He was calm, mid-forties, dark suit, eyes that noticed everything.
He looked at Eli and Sophie first.
Not dramatically.
Respectfully.
“You two had a long trip.”
Sophie nodded solemnly.
Eli asked, “Are you arresting Uncle Ryan?”
Detective Cole glanced at me.
I nodded.
He said, “We’re going to follow the evidence.”
Eli seemed to accept that.
Inside, my parents were already there.
They had let themselves in with Ryan’s copy of my stolen key.
My mother stood in my hallway like she owned the air.
My father had been going through Daniel’s desk.
When he saw me, he actually looked annoyed.
Not guilty.
Annoyed.
“Mara, what are you doing here?”
I almost laughed.
“In my house?”
My mother said, “You should still be in Portugal.”
That was the sentence Detective Cole wrote down immediately.
Richard noticed too late.
Diane tried to recover.
“I mean, we thought you needed time.”
“With no passports?”
Her face tightened.
“You always dramatize everything.”
Detective Cole stepped forward.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need you to remain where you are.”
My father puffed up.
“This is a family property matter.”
“No,” Detective Cole said.
“It is a criminal investigation involving alleged theft of passports, fraud, and attempted unlawful transfer of property.”
My mother’s face changed.
Just a little.
Enough.
Then Laura called.
Ryan’s flight had landed.
He had texted my father:
Opening the house now.
Get the papers ready.
Detective Cole looked at the message.
Then at me.
“Do you want to be present when he arrives?”
I looked at my children.
I almost said no.
Then Eli took my hand.
Sophie held my blazer.
They had been stranded, frightened, and lied to.
They deserved to see the door open for us this time.
“Yes,” I said.

“We’ll be waiting.”
