Chapter 3 - The Wedding Ring Beside the Evidence Reader

Elise’s wedding ring looked impossibly small beside the evidence reader.

A bright circle next to a black device.

Promise beside proof.

Love beside recorded violence.

Guests stared at both as if the altar had been split into two religions.

One was the ceremony they had come to witness.

The other was the truth they could no longer refuse.

Elise had placed the ring down with deliberate care.

Not thrown.

Not dropped.

Placed.

That mattered.

She had wanted no one to say she was hysterical.

No one to say she acted in shock.

No one to say she was unstable from grief.

Adrian had built entire rooms out of those words.

Hysterical.

Fragile.

Confused.

Dramatic.

Unwell.

He had used them whenever Elise asked questions about her father’s crash.

Whenever she found a missing file.

Whenever she noticed a deleted message.

Whenever she asked why her father’s car had been serviced by one of Adrian’s private mechanics the day before the accident.

Now the evidence reader sat beside the ring, and every polite lie had lost its furniture.

Adrian twisted against the agents’ grip.

“You don’t understand what she did,” he said.

Detective Cole’s voice remained calm.

“What did she do?”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

The question trapped him.

Because Elise had not struck him.

She had not threatened him.

She had not tampered with the car.

She had not dragged him to the altar.

She had simply survived long enough to let his own voice play through the cathedral sound system.

Elise lifted her microphone slightly.

Not to speak into it.

Just enough for Adrian to see it.

His face changed.

He realized the cathedral might still be listening.

Recording.

Preserving.

He swallowed his next words.

Detective Cole noticed.

So did Elise.

So did at least fifty people in the front rows.

Vanessa tried to step sideways.

The investigator shifted with her.

She froze.

Elise turned fully toward Detective Cole.

“Is Lily safe?”

No baby in this prompt? Wait, no Lily here.

She stopped herself before any unrelated memory could enter.

Her voice corrected into the present.

“Is my mother outside?”

Detective Cole nodded once.

“She is safe.”

Elise’s shoulders dropped by one inch.

Only one.

But it was the first sign that any part of her body still believed safety could exist.

Adrian saw the relief and hated it.

“You planned this with them.”

Elise looked at him.

May you like

“No, Adrian. I planned this because of you.”
