Chapter 9 - The Last Look at Adrian Blackwell

Adrian Blackwell looked smaller in handcuffs.
Not physically.
He was still tall.
Still groomed.
Still dressed in a black tuxedo worth more than some guests’ monthly rent.
But authority had leaked out of him.
It happened quietly.
At the wrists first.
Then the shoulders.
Then the eyes.
He looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
The betrayal was immediate.
Elise saw it and understood something she had missed through years of fear.
People like Adrian do not build loyalty.
They build advantage.
And advantage leaves when the handcuffs appear.
Detective Cole guided him down the aisle.
Agents flanked him.
Guests remained seated.
The cathedral doors did not open yet.
No dramatic exit.
No press swarm.
No final legal consequence.
Only the slow removal of a groom from the altar where he thought he would own the story.
Adrian twisted enough to look back.
“Elise.”
This time her name sounded less commanding.
Almost pleading.
She did not answer.
Her silence was not weakness anymore.
It was refusal.
The woman he had expected to vow obedience stood beneath stained glass in an ivory slip, bruised and unbowed, while his confession sat preserved inside federal evidence.
He looked at the ring beside the evidence reader.
His face changed.
Maybe he understood then that she had not simply ended the wedding.
She had ended the version of herself he knew how to control.
Detective Cole paused near the aisle as another agent spoke quietly into her earpiece.
She listened.
Then looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head before anyone asked a question.
Detective Cole’s expression did not change.
“Ms. Daley, remain seated.”
Vanessa sat.
Fast.
The guests watched.
Elise closed her eyes for one second.
When she opened them, she looked at her father’s empty chair.
The white rose remained there.
Still.
Waiting.
She walked toward it slowly.
No one stopped her.
The cathedral lights softened across her bruised skin.
She picked up the rose.

And for the first time that day, her hand trembled.
