Chapter 8 - Four Hundred Witnesses

Four hundred guests had come to witness a marriage.

They became witnesses to a crime.

Some were relatives.

Some were investors.

Some were politicians.

Some were friends who had ignored signs because Adrian gave expensive dinners and Elise smiled well under pressure.

Now no one could pretend the bruises were shadows.

No one could pretend the projection was a technical mistake.

No one could pretend the recorded voice belonged to someone else.

The cathedral had transformed their attendance into responsibility.

A senator’s wife lowered her eyes.

A CEO in the third row looked sick.

A bridesmaid gripped a pew until her knuckles whitened.

The priest stood near the altar, face ashen, as if the sanctity of the place had been struck and was still vibrating.

Elise did not blame every guest equally.

But she understood the shape of silence better now.

Silence was not always conspiracy.

Sometimes it was comfort.

And comfort had protected Adrian for too long.

Detective Cole spoke to the room.

“Everyone remain seated until agents clear the aisles.”

No one argued.

The authority in her voice left no space for social negotiation.

Adrian’s face twisted.

“You’re humiliating me.”

Elise turned toward him.

The absurdity almost made her laugh.

“You said that when I asked why my father’s file disappeared.”

His face went still.

“You said that when I asked why my bruises kept needing explanations.”

A few guests gasped.

“You said that when I said I was afraid.”

Her voice remained even.

“And now, finally, you are correct.”

Adrian stared at her.

Humiliation had arrived.

But not in the way he meant.

Not as cruelty.

As exposure.

Detective Cole gestured toward the agents.

They began leading him away from the altar.

Adrian tried to turn toward Elise one last time.

“Don’t do this.”

She looked at him.

“I didn’t cut the brakes.”

The sentence ended him in the room.

Not legally.

Not finally.

But morally.

The guests heard it.

Adrian had no answer.
